Aesop
An inexpensive network platform supporting a single ethernet connection
to CAN, serial, parallel and various automotive interfaces.
Based on a PIC microprocessor and combined with an ethernet interface
the platform comes in several different configurations and provides a
network based communications module which can support many different
protocols.
The Aesop platform is capable of the following:
- 10Mb 10baseT Ethernet
- RS-232 Serial, from 2400-57600 baud (higher and low rates also available)
- CAN 1.2A, 2.0A/B
- J1850 VPW
- SCI serial
- 8 bit Parallel, 3.3v & 5v TTL
- JTAG, 3.3v & 5v TTL
Aesop Products:

- Aesop + Parallel
- serial and Parallel interface
- Aesop + Total
- All interfaces: Serial, CAN, J1850, SCI and Parallel.
Technical details:
PIC18F458 microprocessor with Cirrus/Crystal CS8900A ethernet
chip. Has interfaces for CAN, serial, parrallel as well as automotive
protocols J1850 VPW and Chrysler SCI.
The PIC18F458 has on-chip flash which contains the
communication firmware.
The firmware implements TCP/IP protocol and allows TCP
connections to the board for sending and receiving mid-level protocol
messages. Supports TCP, UDP, DHCP, IP V4, ARP.
CAN 1.2A, 2.0A, 2.0B MCP2551 - meets or exceeds ISO11898-2 spec
(ISO11898-2 high-speed CAN communication in road vehicles)
J1850 interface uses the Motorola MC33390 transceiver. The
protocol is implemented in firmware.
Parallel port implemented with programmable logic. Provides a
bidirectional 8 bit port with two data strobes and two non-dedicated
pins. Each of the 8 bidirectional data pins can be configured as
input or output. The pins can be strapped for either 3.3v or 5.v
logic levels.
In addition the parallel port can operate as a medium speed JTAG port.
Powered by 7-12VDC @ 500ma. The PCB has an
on-board regulator which steps the voltage down to 5vdc for the logic.
